Eco & Community

GMI ecoMtwazi Combined School

Links between the Ghost Mountain Inn, the Rutherfoord family and Mtwazi Combined School go back to the early late 50's when Roy Rutherfoord helped build the original Mtwazi School, a couple of years before building the Ghost Mountain Inn in 1962.

The school has grown tremendously over the past few years and 2007 saw the first year that the school had its first Matric (final year) class. There are currently over 1200 learners squeezed into a school that was originally built for a lot fewer people. Despite the addition of a new classroom wing a few years ago there is still need for additional classrooms and more importantly operation equipment.

2013 sees the launch of a fundraising program for the Centre of Ambition, a combined computer and media centre that will introduce leaners to computers and inspire them to dream bigger and aim higher.

Mtwazi Centre of Ambition

Mtwazi is located in Mkuze in northern KwaZulu Natal. Growing up in a rural area and usually in poorly educated families young people are not aware of what opportunities are available for them in the world. Their ambitions are usually restricted by their circumstances and surroundings. The Mtwazi Centre of Ambition aims to inspire students to dream bigger and to aim higher.

Recycling

A hotel generates a lot of recyclable materials and instead of filling up landfill sights a recycling program has been instituted. The school is also assisting in collecting material and any money raised in selling off recyclables is added to the School Resource fund.
